SSH referred to as Secure Shell, or Secure Socket Shell is a network protocol to allow users/administrators to remote to servers or network devices. If you have switch or router devices and want to remote to the device through SSH protocol, first you need to enable SSH protocol on those devices.
In the unifi controller, you can create many sites and adopt to manage many unifi access point. Each unifi access point is managed under the unifi controller and you can create multiple SSID, IP addresses, Hostname, SNMP, Email alerts, and other security. One more security protocol that allows you to manage the unifi access point by command line is called SSH protocol. Enable SSH authentication on a site in the unifi controller, then you can remotely manage all APs on that site.
After you remote by SSH to manage the APs, you can command line to set the hostname, and IP addresses, update firmware and do many things more on those access points in that site. This topic will let you know how to enable SSH on the unifi controller.
How to enable SSH on APs in Unifi Controller
1. Create a Site and adopt APs in your site
For example, now you have 2 access points on your site named BS, and you want to enable SSH on that site for remote by using SSH protocol to manage all those 2 access points. Let’s see the step-by-step how to enable SSH on it.

2. Enable SSH
Navigate to Settings -> System Setting -> Controller Configuration

Click on Device SSH authentication

Click on Device SSH Authentication to enable.
- Fill in the username (What you want)
- Fill in the password (What you want)

Note: If you want to create a specific SSH key on your own, you can click Add to create it, then when you use SSH client to remote, you can use that SSH key.
Conclusion: You are done enabling SSH on your site in unifi controller. So, all the APs that you have adopted in that site, will be able to remote by SSH client with the username and password that you provided above.
3. Test
Download any SSH client as you want, for this example, we use Putty as an SSH client to remote to unifi access point.
